The Gandhi Farm and Centre reimagines rural life through the timeless wisdom of Gandhi. From organic cultivation to value-based education, it sows seeds of sustainability, equality, and non-violence, nurturing both the land and the lives it sustains.

In a quiet valley near Kodaikanal, lies a unique experiment in living – a space where land and
the spirit grow together.
Here, we run a Gandhian farm that brings together two complementary visions:

  • A model organic farm that demonstrates sustainable farming practices and chemical –
    free agriculture, that inspires local growers and;
  • Our Gandhi Centre for Values, which cultivates human ethics, social consciousness
and the timeless principles of truth, simplicity, and compassion.

Together, they reflect the essence of Gandhian philosophy – harmony with nature, dignity of
labour, and the pursuit of truth through simplicity.

The model organic farm

Nestled in a serene forested valley at a short distance from Kodaikanal, our model organicfarm is a living experiment in sustainable agriculture. Established in 2014, the farm demonstrates that organic farming can be both practical and profitable in the hills.

In India, farmers often learn best not through theory but by observing successful examples in their own communities. The model farm was created with this in mind; to serve as a hands-on learning space where local farmers can see organic methods in action, gain confidence, and replicate these techniques on their own land.

Here, crops are grown entirely without chemical fertilizers or pesticides. With support from NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development), the farm also runs a Horticultural Resource Centre, established in 2018, to help farmers in the Kodaikanal hills improve their cultivation practices.

The Centre provides technical expertise in the region’s four major crops – potatoes, garlic, carrots, and beans – and maintains demonstration plots across 20 villages. Through these efforts, we aim to help farmers form a Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) that can strengthen their collective voice, improve market access, and ensure fair returns.

The farm is a growing movement toward ecological balance, local resilience, and sustainable livelihoods.

The Gandhi Centre for Values

Tucked into the heart of the organic farm stands the Gandhi Centre for Values, a quiet yet powerful space dedicated to nurturing the spirit of humanity. The Centre draws inspiration from Mahatma Gandhi’s timeless principles and seeks to make them relevant to contemporary life – truth, tolerance, simplicity, respect for all faiths, cleanliness, self-restraint, and compassion. These are not abstract ideals but practical guides to living responsibly and meaningfully in today’s world.

At a time when ethics and civic behaviour are rarely emphasized in formal education, the Gandhi Centre offers a space for reflection and renewal. It invites students, farmers, and ordinary citizens to come together, think critically about the challenges of our times, and explore Gandhian and other ethical alternatives for modern living.

Our latest offering is a two-day residential workshop titled “Introduction to Gandhian Thought and Our Lives.” Open to all, it allows participants to explore Gandhi’s philosophy in a deeply personal way – set against the tranquil backdrop of the Palani Hills.

Over time, the Gandhi Centre hopes to become a hub for dialogue, learning, and action.
